Mining fleet at First Quantum’s Frontier mine in the DRC

Vancouver, Canada --- MININGREVIEW.COM --- 08 July 2010 - Listed on the Toronto and London Stock Exchanges, First Quantum Minerals Limited ‒ a growing mining and metals company engaged in mineral exploration, development and mining, predominantly in Africa ‒ and its subsidiaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Frontier and Comisa, are assisting the DRC Ministry of Health, following a fuel tanker explosion in the eastern region of the country.

In a statement released here the company revealed that it had sourced, and was in the process of transporting, two tonnes of medical supplies from South Africa to Bukavu by a chartered aircraft. The supplies included specialised burns bandages and creams, painkillers, and antibiotics which would assist the local health authorities in their efforts to treat the victims of the explosion.

The statement added that First Quantum personnel were working with the Governor of South Kivu and local DRC health services to ensure the efficient and effective delivery and use of the medical supplies, which were expected to be delivered this afternoon. The company was also seeking to coordinate its efforts with the UN mission in the region.
