The Buffelsfontein gold plant

Johannesburg, South Africa --- MININGREVIEW.COM --- 02 September 2008 - Emerging South African resources company Simmer and Jack Mines Limited (Simmers) has announced that a seismic event at its Buffelsfontein Gold Mine in the North West Province has claimed the life of one mineworker and injured another.

A news release issued here said the incident had taken place at the mine`s Number Two shaft, triggering a fall of ground in a stope where the men had been working. The injured worker was being treated at the Duff Scott hospital.
 
It added that mining operations at the Number Two shaft had been suspended pending a review of seismic safety initiatives at the shaft
 
Simmers CEO Gordon Miller commented: “The company views this incident in an extremely serious light, and will be reviewing the situation with representatives of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME), organised labour and independent rock engineering specialists.

Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) – the fifth largest gold producer in the world – announced yesterday that  two mineworkers had lost their lives in a weekend  incident at its Elandsrand mine, and that work had been halted until further notice.
