The government of North Darfur has dismissed death figures circulated in the media this week of about 100 miners who were trapped last week inside a collapsed gold mine in the Jebel Amir district of Sudan, more than 200km north-west of the North Darfur state capital, El Fasher.

The search for about 100 workers who are believed to have died inside a collapsed gold mine in Sudan's Darfur region has ended, after nine rescuers were also trapped in further collapses in the mine. No one has been found alive.

London-based gold producer Centamin says total gold production for the quarter ended March 31 at its Sukari gold mine in Egypt was a record 87,016oz ‒ a 77% increase on the corresponding quarter in 2012 and a rise of 2% above Q4 of last year.

Due to a lack of diesel and a short-fall in working capital in Egypt for the local operations, Centamin plc has been compelled to suspend operations at its Sukari mine ‒ the only producing gold mine in Egypt ‒ and to place the mine on care and maintenance until these issues are satisfactorily resolved.

North African focused mineral exploration, development and mining company Centamin is to appeal against an Egyptian court ruling that has declared invalid its rights to operate the Sukari mine, its main asset in the North African country.
